We have all had times where we have experienced disappointment, but here is what to avoid and how not to let it cause us serious problems.

One way we get disappointed is allowing ourselves to look forward unwisely to things that may not ever happen. It is idealistically believing for an outcome without actual faith or hope but wishful thinking directing us. Wishful or idealistic thinking comes from our soul and emotions rather than our spirit. This always will lead to the wrong thing. It’s a substitute for real love from God.

“Now hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” – Romans 5:5

We can’t get disappointed if we never appoint something to a wrongful or improper place in our thinking. It can happen easily enough where we suppose, “this vacation will fix everything” or our weariness is physical, not spiritual. A second reason we get disappointed is lack of counsel or bad counsel. We will rush into doing something without any wisdom and end up making a bad decision with a worse outcome.

“Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counselors they are established.” – Proverbs 15:22

A third reason is when we appoint to others what we are to look only to God for, we can & will stay chronically disappointed. We appoint this thing to do this and this for us and it doesn’t. These “wrong appointments” to our wife, husband, boss, friends, relationships, hobbies, interests, or job to give us something only God can are really a form of idolatry. We pursue careers, jobs, interests, thinking this and that will happen with them but it doesn’t and the failure hurts! Scripture is clear about the outcome of placing confidence in wrong things.

“They were disappointed because they were confident.” – Job 6:20

So what do we need to do? How do we stop the cycle? First we need to repent of putting these other things in front of God. God has to be the GO TO for every part of our life. We can’t expect peace from God when we are living out of inward fleshly strife? Then second we must cancel our wrong “appointments”! We have to drop placing these false expectations on others or other things. Put your hope and trust in HIM!

“Better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” – Psalms 118:8

“For the Lord will be your confidence…” – Proverbs 3:26
