The Vows We Make – Part II

11/27/2013

Comments

There are righteous and unrighteous vows. Marriage is a vow we make to the Lord and our mate, to love & stay in sickness and in health. When we get baptized we vow to follow the Lord. When we buy a house or finance a car, you make a vow to pay for a certain number of years on the contract. To walk away from it is breaking that vow. When we go through deliverance, leaving the occult or illicit relationships, we break the vows/ties we made with the enemy or the person(s) in those relationships. We sever those ties we made once and for all so to follow Jesus forever.

Most Christians say they want that same authority Jesus has, but to have it, the believer must value their promises made and be people of truth. It is far better to promise nothing then promise and not deliver. To have Christ’s authority operating in us, we take on His nature with that same kind of integrity with our words! We live in a land of lies and liars but Christians must live differently and let their yes be yes and no, no! To expect sicknesses and demons to obey us, we must live our lives uncluttered with broken promises and commitments. If we make a promise or a commitment we should think it through first and then choose to follow through with it or get out of it.
“My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger, if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, then do this, my son, and save yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor: go, hasten, and plead urgently with your neighbor.Give your eyes no sleep and your eyelids no slumber; save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the fowler.” – Proverbs 6:1-6

This was written in a culture where a person’s word was their bond and meant everything. They placed value on escaping foolish commitments as a life and death thing. Why? Because they believed God judges individuals on what they said with their mouths and what they actually did. Today we live in a land of falsehood, a culture that judges people by what they meant to do or say,not what they actually said or did. Running away from obligations doesn’t make them go away. Much of the church wrongly teaches by coming to Jesus all wrongs you committed before salvation toward others and from now on is magically gone. NOT TRUE. The Lord forgives us but gives us a new heart so we will do right to face and fix the consequences of our words and deeds!

Here is how we get free of foolish vows or commitments we have made:
  1. BE HONEST. If we made an inward vow to ourselves trying to protect ourselves, repent & confess it as unbelief and distrust in the Lord. Then choose to trust the Lord.He can lead with His wisdom.
  2. LISTEN TO YOUR CONSCIENCE. If you are reminded of something you forgot, fix it, pay it back, get it right.
  3. GO TO THOSE you have broken commitments to, stolen money from or did harm to and ask forgiveness & release from the obligation. Some may have to pay back in full or with interest.
  4. YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR OTHER’S EXPECTATIONS OF YOU, but you are responsible for your promises or vows you made to them that you broke or failed. Face it NOW, in this life, before you stand before the Lord on that final Day!
